So when I found out about PIF treasuries, my participation was all but guaranteed. My "Cloudy with a Chance of Rain Necklace" (pictured above) was featured in a treasury called Aquatic Flame by Katie Neall of Furious Designs. When I went to leave a comment, I saw this posted by the treasury's creator:

Smooth (and Soft) As Silk
Jan 06 2012I am always looking for new materials to use in my jewelry. Maybe I shouldn't say new because one hard and fast rule I have is that all the beads and chain in my jewelry must actually be vintage. I'm a stickler for recycling, reusing, upcycling and repurposing. I take discarded, unwanted or broken things and turn them into fun, wearable pieces. The first "new" material I discovered was t shirt yarn and I have created many necklaces with it. It is easy to use, has a raw, unfinished look which I love to combine with vintage pearls and fancy glass beads and it is very soft around the neck. But I am not just a seller on etsy, I am a shopper too. And recently, I have been looking at things, mostly scarves, made from recycled saris. I found a shop, Designtalentedone, that sells lovely silk ribbon made from recycled saris and I ordered some. The ribbon is the right heft and thickness for my purposes, comes in exquisite colors and is very soft.

Sari Ribbon - My New Favorite Thing?

I think I've told you that large lots of broken and/or tangled vintage necklaces are getting harder and harder to find...at least at reasonable prices. When I first starting making my jewelry, I used vintage pieces that I had owned for years and never wore. Then I started buying large lots of vintage necklaces and salvaging their useful beads and chains for my pieces. I even found a few wonderful etsy sellers of "uncirculated" vintage chain at affordable prices.
And then I discovered "yarn" made from recycled cotton t shirts and could create necklaces that were as soft to wear as they were light and eco-friendly. I have several etsy shops that I buy this yarn from regularly but I'm always looking for new recycled material to use in my jewelry. Today I listed the first necklace in which I used recycled, unfinished, sari silk ribbon. I have been looking at scarves made from vintage saris for months and last week, the silk sari ribbon popped up as one of my "you also might like" items...and I liked...and I bought...and I used. The colors of the ribbon are so intense that I had no trouble finding vintage glass and plastic beads in my collection to match it. TADA! River Daughter Necklace
